The Department of Homeland Security announced that Ethiopia’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS) will be extended for 18 more months, from June 13, 2024, to December 12, 2025.
This means that people from Ethiopia who already have TPS can keep it if they still qualify. They need to re-register during a 60-day period by filling out Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status.
Additionally, individuals from Ethiopia or those who last lived there and came to the US on or before April 11, 2024, can apply for TPS for the first time. They need to submit an initial application using Form I-821 within the designated timeframe.
If someone’s work permit (called an Employment Authorization Document or EAD) expires soon, it will automatically be extended until June 12, 2025.
If someone already applied for TPS or a work permit before April 15, 2024, they don’t need to apply again. If their application is approved, they’ll get TPS and a new work permit until December 12, 2025.

People who want to re-register or apply for the first time should follow the instructions in the notice published in the Federal Register. This includes completing Form I-765 and Application for Employment Authorization if they want a work permit.
