VP Kamala Harris to Meet Guatemala’s President on Immigration and Corruption

Vice President Kamala Harris plans to meet President Bernardo Arévalo of Guatemala on Monday.

This is happening because many people from Guatemala are coming to the United States, and the government wants to find solutions.

They will talk about “safe mobility offices.” These offices help people apply for refugee status without having to travel to the United States.

This saves them from dangerous journeys and from paying smugglers. Immigration is a big concern for both Democrats and Republicans.

They agree the system needs fixing, but they haven’t been able to do it yet. President Joe Biden asked Vice President Harris to work on this issue.

Kamala Harris and Arévalo will also talk about fighting corruption in Guatemala. Arévalo is known for his efforts against corruption.

Arévalo became president in August. He won by a large margin, surprising many people. He’s known for challenging powerful people in Guatemala and fighting corruption.

Vice President Kamala Harriswill also announce that the U.S. plans to invest $5.2 billion in Central America.

Even though the number of people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally in February went up a bit, it’s still not as high as before. Out of those caught, nearly 24,000 were from Guatemala.
